Status symbol and cultural signifier, repository of hidden selves and fashion industry cash cow, the designer handbag is the perfect canvas for six brilliant artists to explore the complexities of modern femininity in Ornament, our latest collaboration with east end art gallery Transition to mark the start of Frieze week. Using found handbags, Kirsty Buchanan, Annabel Dover, Cathy Lomax, Alex Michon, Alli Sharma and Corinna Spencer play with the notion of the bag as the must-have designer item by transforming found handbags into unique painted objects.
As Cathy Lomax puts it: ‘In many of Angela Carter’s stories, jewels (which appear on many of the Ornament bags) play a fetishistic role, where they are the tools of seduction of a predatory male, which the author sees as a negation of femininity to which women themselves are attracted. Ornament explores, contradicts and delights in this female fascination.’
In addition to the painted bags, artist Paul Kindersley will unearth and obscure classic beauties from the past in his performative makeup demonstrations and Transition will curate an in-store bookshop selling their publications Garageland and Arty alongside zines, badges, corsages and limited edition prints by artists such as Rose Wylie and Ryan Mosley.
Private View: Monday 14 October 6-8pm
Show continues until 17 November 2013
